Venice, Florida
The Shark Tooth Capital of the World — a walkable downtown, world-class beaches, and a Gulf Coast soul that's impossible to forget.
A City With a Story
Venice was platted in 1925 by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, who envisioned a planned city modeled after Venice, Italy — complete with wide boulevards, a Mediterranean Revival architectural style, and a grand hotel. The city's distinctive look, with its arched arcades and terracotta rooftops, still defines downtown today.
In the 1950s and 60s, Venice became the winter home of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, bringing performers, elephants, and a colorful cast of characters to town each season. The circus connection is still celebrated in local lore and at the Venice Circus Arts program.
Venice is also world-famous for its shark teeth. Millions of fossilized teeth wash ashore on Venice Beach and Caspersen Beach each year, carried by currents from ancient offshore deposits. Locals call it 'Venice lace' — the black teeth glinting in the sand at low tide.
Beaches
Venice Beach
The main public beach with a fishing pier, concessions, volleyball courts, and the best shark tooth hunting in the shallows. Parking is plentiful and the water is calm.
Arrive early on weekends — the main lot fills by 9 AM in season.
Caspersen Beach
A wilder, less-developed stretch south of Venice Beach. No concessions, fewer crowds, and the absolute best spot for serious shark tooth hunters with a sifting scoop.
Bring a mesh sifter and check the tide line after a storm — that's when the best teeth surface.
Brohard Paw Park
Florida's first dog-friendly beach, right next to Venice Beach. Leashed dogs are welcome on a dedicated stretch of sand. A local favorite for sunset walks.
Fresh water rinse stations are available at the park entrance.
