Osprey, Florida

Where nature takes center stage. Oscar Scherer State Park, Historic Spanish Point, and miles of paddling trails make Osprey the Gulf Coast's best-kept outdoor secret.

Pop: ~6,000Est. 1888Sarasota County

Roots Run Deep

Osprey's history stretches back to the late 19th century, when pioneer families settled along the shores of Little Sarasota Bay. The Webb family arrived in 1867 and established one of the earliest homesteads in the region, eventually creating the estate now known as Historic Spanish Point.

Bertha Honoré Palmer, the Chicago socialite and businesswoman, purchased the Spanish Point property in 1910 and transformed it into a showcase estate. She also played a pivotal role in developing the broader Sarasota region, attracting settlers and investment that shaped the area for generations.

Today, Osprey remains one of the least developed communities on the Sarasota County coast — a deliberate choice reflected in the large swaths of protected land, including Oscar Scherer State Park, which covers over 1,300 acres of Florida scrub, pine flatwoods, and coastal habitat.

Waterways & Access

Little Sarasota Bay

A shallow, protected bay ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. The calm waters and abundant wildlife make it one of the best paddling destinations in Sarasota County.

Launch from the public ramp at Blackburn Point Road for easy access to the bay and the Intracoastal.

Oscar Scherer State Park Waterways

South Creek winds through the park, offering a designated paddling trail through scrub and pine flatwoods. Alligators, otters, and scrub jays are commonly spotted.

Rent a kayak or canoe at the park's concession stand — no need to bring your own.

Osprey Creek

A tidal creek connecting Little Sarasota Bay to the surrounding wetlands. Excellent for birding and wildlife photography at low tide.

The creek is best explored by kayak at mid to high tide — low tide can leave you stranded in the shallows.
